Like a lot of stores out there, I have a guy or two that helps out one day a week for a little store credit. Luke Vorborny was one of those guys for Krypton Comics. For about 2 years Luke would organize the weekly Yu-Gi-Oh tournament and ensure that no players were taken advantage of in trade, or picked on by older players. He would help us out on special occasions like Free Comic Book Day and I always tried to include him in store employee outings.
This past Sunday September 24, Luke dropped a friend off in Avoca, NE and started a long drive home. Apparantly, Luke fell asleep at the wheel and his car crashed off a bridge. He did not survive. After Luke’s name was given out on the nightly news, phone calls started coming in from concerned gamers, friends, and even parents of some of the kids Luke would take care of on Friday nights. Word of his death has hit us all very hard it is difficult to talk about without choking up.
After speaking with Luke’s family, Krypton Comics has decided to hold a Luke Vorborny memorial gaming weekend. All the tournament entry fees will be donated to the family to help with funeral costs. Other stores in town are even pitching in by sending players to us on Friday or passing the hat around at their events.
Luke had just turned 21 years old and was robbed of his chance to experiance the long life he deserved. With his passing, Luke has shown all of us here at Krypton Comics that life is precious and fleeting.
